Josie Garthwaite is a freelance writer and journalist covering science, energy, and transportation for publications including The New York Times, National Geographic Digital Media and Wired Magazine. Based in San Francisco, Josie often covers innovative ideas born in the universities and startups of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

Josie has been a staff writer for the GigaOM Network’s Earth2Tech blog and GigaOM Pro research service, diving deep into new technology and business models for electric cars, energy storage, smart transportation systems, and green IT. Her reporting and analysis have also appeared on the websites of BusinessWeekCNNMoney, Reuters, Salon, The Huffington Post, and Technology Review, among others.

Previously, as a lifestyle editor for magazines from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and the Sierra Club, Josie tackled topics ranging from the tastiest ethical chocolate to joint health, energy conservation, and beauty products. In addition to editing and writing for magazines, newspapers, and blogs, she has provided expert commentary for radio programs from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, the Sierra Club, and NPR, hosted episodes of the GigaOM Network’s green car video series, Green Overdrive, and moderated panels for GigaOM’s annual Green:Net conference.

Josie is a graduate of New York University and Stanford University’s Graduate Program in Journalism.
